Monitoring moles for changes is essential to detect any potential signs of skin cancer early on. If you notice any of the following signs in a mole, it is advisable to have it checked by a dermatologist. In this blog, we ask expert dermatologists, Dr Deepak Jakhar & Dr Ishmeet Kaur, managing Dermosphere Clinic, New Delhi for their opinion on moles. Following are the things you should consider if you have moles on skin:
1. Asymmetry: One half of the mole does not match the other half in terms of size, shape, or color.
2. Borders: Irregular, blurred, or poorly defined borders around the mole.
3. Color: Uneven coloring or multiple colors within the mole, such as shades of brown, black, blue, red, or white.
4. Diameter: An increase in the size of the mole, typically larger than the size of a pencil eraser (about 6mm or more), although some melanomas can be smaller.
5. Evolution: Any changes in the mole over time, such as rapid growth, changes in color or shape, or if it starts to itch, bleed, or become tender.
6. New Mole: The appearance of a new mole on the skin, especially in adulthood, should be examined.
7. Elevation: The mole becomes raised or elevated from the skin's surface.
8. Surface: The mole's surface may become scaly, rough, or show signs of ulceration.
9. Family History: If you have a family history of skin cancer or have previously had skin cancer, you may have a higher risk, and any changes in moles should be assessed promptly.
10. Location: Moles on certain areas of the body, such as the palms, soles, or mucous membranes, may warrant extra attention as they have a higher risk of developing into melanoma.
Remember the "ABCDE" rule as a helpful guide for identifying potential worrisome changes in moles:
- A: Asymmetry
- B: Irregular Borders
- C: Different Colors
- D: Diameter Larger Than 6mm
- E: Evolution or Changes Over Time
If you notice any of these signs or have concerns about a mole, it is essential to schedule an appointment with a dermatologist for a thorough evaluation. Early detection and timely medical evaluation can significantly improve the chances of successful treatment for skin cancer.
